Neophobia - Unwillingness to try new things or break from routine.
I think the problem here is one of expectation, because this is the next iteration in the burnout series we expect more of the same and not a total reinvention. If this game was called anything else we would probably be very excited by the things that are being talked about.
It is getting slightly depressing reading about how people are giving up on a series that they love because, in essence, they are scared of change. Racers upset by a lack of set tracks, Crashers upset by a lack of set crashes, Road ragers upset by……..actually these guys should be in heaven.
If you want a game with all the crash junctions or racetracks you know and love, there is a deceptively simple solution already provided to you by those kind folks at Criterion¹ (burnout team rocks!(one for the podcast fans out there)).
If the reason you are not looking forward to it is because it is a totally new experience, and not “more of the same“, how can you say you will not enjoy it - without having first experienced it?
I for one cannot wait to try it out and I may be disappointed and head back to Revenge, but I have yet to play a Criterion game that I did not love, and I find it hard to believe that they would make such a huge mistake.
It should also be noted that whether we like to admit it or not we do not represent the average Burnout fan, if we were to look in from the outside I think we would be viewed as the “Loony obsessive diehards”(LOD), and not as I am sure we would like to believe the concerned fans of the series. If you disagree with being called an LOD take a look around, you are on a site dedicated to a computer game that maybe a few thousand still play on a regular basis. I for one am happy to be an LOD, for Revenge at least, as I frikkin love that game. The cool thing is though, if I love Paradise I can always come back for a visit with all the neophobics on Revenge.
