The Big Surf Island Update or BSI, Brilliant Single (Player) Involvement

I think it's worth the 1000 points for the 7 hours play I had including all the 10 challenges done 10 times in Multi-player, people were desperate for that P12 Diamond, lol. (I was on and off line during those 7 hours, so I could have done it a lot faster, but I don't want to rush my 1000MSP, lol)

Though not accurate, it's been 1 year and 6 months since Paradise was released, and The Island/Big Surf Island is the culmination of Community feed back via telemetry (still a bone of contention for me, because if the TD's and Racing worked in the early days as well as voice coms, I think racing would have won over just driving about, but then again there are a lot of new people that just did only that, so hence Free-Burn won over Racing!), website reading/blogging, Showtime Scoring winners (have you found the easter eggs yet)and playing about with the handling and stuff, tweeking if you will, to give you the ultimate play ground, to Stunt Run and Showtime in!

Lots of places to get over 15 million stunt run scores, the Island is a non-stop Stunt Run Paradise if you stick to just playing the game without doing or going for wall tap spins or m4d l33t barrel rolls and easily over 4 million showtime scores, as there is traffic everywhere and a good collection of buses to rack up the scores, though I do find it hard to get across the bridge during Showtime, I could not see any traffic on it, but I was going the other way at the time, lol. But I can see people getting some Huge Scores in the next couple of days.

Back to the Post Head Line, the Single Player Experience on the Island is great! Loved the Road Rules (when they worked right though more of an online problem) Showtime scores (but not very big scores to beat mind), Bike Road Rules Day and Night (only done mine with the Toy Bike, but it was fun to do and because I can), Stunt Runs are fast but rack up good points with all the Jumps and Billboards about, and lots of Air time to be had too!

I thought the way the Marked Man was set up with check points was great, way more than on the main land, gave you a place to go like a real race, like the Road Rages from Burnout 3, but playing Hunt the Blue Guy or whatever name we made up then, it's so long ago. Oh, Chase the rabbit, that was it. Check points for Road Rage would have been a good edition too, but alas no...

Road Rage was just survive until you got your Takedowns, which was fun. And now the Island is out, I went back to the Main Land to test out how good the Hunter Olympus Governor was against hard hitting Pickups and other wieghty cars like the Van and the Old Annihilator too, on one of my two remaining Road Rages I have to do over there. And since they were my last Paradise events, I should have been going for over 27 takedowns in that event, and it was reset due to the Island to 15!!!? So an Easy score to get, lol.

Running down Paradise Keys Bridge for Road Rage was fun, and I love the aggressiveness of the AI, they were flying everywhere and hitting the barrel roll jumps trying to get verticles (sp) on me, lol. I even scored several Barrel roll verticle takedowns too, which was something I aimed to do ever since I saw Paradise was coming out all those years ago!

The Burning Route was fun for the Dust Storm and enjoy the Super Turbo, works well in a "Host" Specified race, but not selectable in a Host Picks type race event?

The Island Tour Races were great fun, it showed a lot of routes/ways around the Island for short cuts and other alternate routes and showed off the great work that the Team have done, in the last year.

I loved the races, they so reminded of what racing in a Burnout game is like, and did them several times, they flowed well, though maybe too many check points added, like the "There and Back Again" race, which could be cut down by half the amount.

The Cheverons from the sky check points were great and I wonder why they were never in the original game to start with?

Finding all the smashes and billboards was fun, and looking for my last ones was like some great treasure hunt, but when helping hn6, I found his last Billboard and smash for him, by shear coincidence, Suffur has the power, lol.

The cars were good unlocks, true I wish I got more, and that they were others than just toys, but it might make some people go back and buy the Toy Car packs, because they are fun, though can cause some nausia due to them bobbing about so much, to help with that, go in-car view ( hint Warped, lol).

The Carson Annihilator Street Rod, is one fast machine, but still not as awesum as the all rounder Hot Rod Extreme, but a good edition to the game for those downhill road times, or so I hear, I tried and failed, lol.

The GT Toy Night Hawk has some speed to it, as well as the Toy P12 88 Special (and its so silent when in Hover mode), take that for a run across the jumps across Paradise Keys Bridge, coming from the main land and see the Air Time rack up. The Toy Bootlegger was alright, the sound effect though funny when you hit the horn does get on ones chest, and the Toy Spirit was good for Showtime. (The P12 Diamond did nothing for me, sorry, and as a prize for doing 500 challenges was a bit lame in my honest opinoin, I was expecting something more unique, rather than a souped up clone.)

So for 1000MSp or whatever price you paid for the single player experience, it's worth it, but it's only equivilant to a night out, around 3 to 7 hours game play depending how rushed or slow you want to be, and with 9 new cars, it could seem a bargin.

Hell, I waited this long, so I had to buy it right, lol.

It does seem odd that for all the hard work the team did, I have to refer it to a night out on the beer, true, way cheaper, but both just as fun, but this is a game add on and I was expecting more? Please Sirs can I have some more?

Now the Multi Player.

The Challenges were great fun, but over so quick since they are a universal 10, amounting to anyone in the room can do them and unlock them.

Then again has anyone done them all, with 2 to 8 players in a squence, to see if there is a hidden unlock, for doing all players?

And whenever hn6 puts up his video of 'Going through the consruction yard Hoops' challenge, you will see you don't have to go up to the roof of the buildings to do it, he did it from the Pit, lol. I even managed it, though not during the challenge, though I am still trying to jump out of the Pit/Bowl, and jumping over Shires to land on the beach for a distance jump and air time scores, I will do it, just got to find the right car, getting close with the Toy P12 88 special.

You can compete for Stunt Runs scores and Showtime, Road Rules for all the vehicals (sp), then that is it!

There are no racing check points/ or racing for that mater on the Island, which is a real shame, and really dessip me off no end, they create this great type of lapped racing, with Cheverons from the Sky, and they don't put them in multiplayer or even on the main land. WTF!

Road Rage, Marked Man, are not even on the Island either, same, with Cops and Robbers! If you start any of these event you have to drive over the Bridge to compete/play them (Cops and Robbers the usual Jump to their start points).

If everyone is on the Island and you start a Road Rage, it does give a good point to race across the Bridge together, and fun could ensue/insue (sp?) but as the TD'd phys' is still off it can be over quite quick, but it does seem to have been tweeked a little.

On another tweeking thing, some of the cars have had some Speed and Boost changes done as well, I noticed the Roadster has gone down by one speed, sure it was a 3 speed not a 2! But I could be wrong?

I find that longevity for the Island is cut to a very short experience, with no online racing, or online Island tour for that matter, and since the Island has been created in such away, that going for mad flat spins and barrel rolls seems to have been cut from the equation as well, the jumps have no real decent run ups or are too steep for speed, to flat spin more than 1300 degrees and the best Barrel Roll I can do is a 6 off the Crane Jumps!

Don't get me wrong, it's early days to find wall tap areas and stuff like that. The Inspiral Car Park has a lot of potential for flat spins. But when you first see the Island in pictures you think 10 barrel rolls and 3000 degree flat spins would be the norm even for new people to the game, well maybe not 10 but you get me, as well as mad jump distances, but the best I heard about was 320 yards jump, and I'm close to that from the Ski Jump, if I make it into the Pit, I might break that 320 mark yet.

I have gone back to the main land with the new cars, and the P12 Toy 88 Special does a 280 yard jump into the quarry with ease and some roof distance landings off Read Lane to the train tracks, and the dust storm does 5&6 barrel rolls from the usual places. But with the Island I was expecting some mad stuff, and alas no, once again dissapointment...

I find that even with all the hard work and time that has gone into this game (It looks very pretty since it's purchased birth), and even with that assumed promise you see it ,you can drive it, which is not true there are crash zones everywhere on the Island, this game has not really been that open to begin with, let alone now.

Yes, it's a driving game, and I think that Alex (have to pick on you dude as you're the boss) has been very stubborn about putting in their trade mark racing from the other Burnout games into this game, I though that was what Criterion were going to deliver, a quality racing game for next gen!

And for me that has not happened, yes they have done some great work, with design and making it look visually pleasing, some hard work trying to get 8 players doing some very interesting stuff, from challenges to stunt runs, showtimes and being able to do them at the same time in the same room if you get me. All at 60fps, but it could have been so much more, and there is probably stuff i can't see that is really amazing, but i expected open world game play, drive anywhere, and so many options to racing or other game modes that I would run out of sticks to wave about!

Audience participation time!

I would like to ask the community from this site or readers of my blogs from anywhere, who have played Paradise for more than 100 hours to try and state what they were hoping for from this game, what is missing, what needs fixing (and bugzilla is still open for any niggly bits, i don't need those type of things listed here, cheers, go there instead, like that god damn lamp post outside the baseball stadium), what could be added, it might not make a blind bit of difference, but I would like to see what you people are thinking and hoping for.

I know some people are very happy with what Paradise is and has become please state that in your comments, but I know a lot of people are very dissapointed, and had expectations dashed. So time to talk about it. And be constructive or at least polite with your distructive comments. And don't diss other people's comments either, if they Like it cool, if they hate it cool, but this is more a wish list of fixes, wants and tweeks, and to some it will probably a waste of time/breath, but I want to see it all collected here for all to see, so keep a lid on the outrage and keep to I wanna see's, wanna does type of thing, rather that, Showtime sux type of comments, thank you for your co-operation in advance, I know you will try very hard, lol.

Some stuff I was hoping for, other than what I have ever written before, lol. Which still counts but i forgot them so time to start fresh, lol.

I know I was hoping for some racing tweeks (like what I saw on the Island but for all of the online modes, Sky Cheverons, Lapped racing, more check point placement spots, {even Yellow Barrier Cheverons too, lol, never gonna happen that one}).

That the motor bike section of the game would be finished, with racing, times, and challenge times collected to a leader boards.

That we would get world leader boards for any type of scoring in any part of the game. (One wish of mine was times for each car per road and race, so it was not always down to the faster cars for those scores). Also that Bikes and Cars could share the same space, in this "open world"?

That Road Rage was like the old school style with a start and finish points, with boost for Blue's and boost lock for Red's. And that you could create the track yourself for all the modes, even a stunt run type of racing too?

That we could manipulate a car's, boost and speed and wieght class, like a special car, and for all boost types as well. Just for fun.

I have others but I'll leave it at that, as some people will think the same as me and some will not and vise versa, and no "I want the plane" type comments either, that was an experiment, and even if it came to purchaseable light, it's not really behind a driving /racing game concept unless there were 8 of them in the sky too, with check points, lol.

Before anyone thinks about it, I do like this game I have spent a lot of hours on it, not as much as some, but I keep coming back in the hope that we will get more or that someone finds an answer to all our hopes for a great all round racing experience, I hope it will be in Paradise, but it could be that Split/Second will be the one for me. I know I am enjoying Fuel, but the online is even messed up on that but its only a week old, and has time for future updates to fix those problems.

Paradise has almost run it's course, it's going to be 2 years old in the New Year, and Criterion may have some more instore for us before that time has come, and I hope so, but after the cost of the equivilant of two games paid for, for the Paradise experience, I was expecting a more solid rounded out game after this time frame?

I still can't believe there is no Island Racing or Paradise enabled Sky Cheverons, or sky markers or whatever you want to call them, in this update! What a real shame imho!

Patience is something I taught myself, so I never know when it's going to run out?

By the way if anyone was watching DownLoad Festival, Limp Bizkit had a great set but their Guitarist was dress as an XBox Live Avatar, lol.

I was in an enviable position of playing Paradise at Criterion Games studios for a weekend back in October 2007, feels like a lifetime ago now! So, I got a feel of what Paradise was a few months before release.  I pretty much spent the weekend in a whirl as it was a very exciting experience and Paradise was very different to the other Burnouts and I couldn't really take it all in.

When January rolled around I was still shocked that there was no online Road Rage?? I figured this would be a given and that we just weren't shown this when we visited as we were just shown the new stuff.

There were lots of things that have been added in DLC which I think should have been in the game from day 1. This is what gives me the most negative feelings about Paradise.

I found it very odd that there was not more to do online when the game first came out. Online Stunt Run, Road Rage and Marked Man were all added fairly quickly, but not quickly enough for a lot of the original Burners to keep with the game.

Another initial mistake was the VOIP problems on the 360... joining random rooms and not being able to communicate really killed the game for me as I was not able to feel like part of the community.

I think Paradise has suffered from lots of little hic-cups like this.

When we spoke to CG about the checkpoints early on, they didn't want visual checkpoints as it made it look too gamey, they wanted to create a submersive environment, what was the word they used all the time at the beginning? Seamless! Give you a world and not put anything in it which will take you out of that world.

I think the visual checkpoints they have added to the Island are among the best visual checkpoints of any racing game I have seen. These for me would have made a HUGE impact to my enjoyment of racing in Paradise if they had of been included from the beginning, even adding them now as the checkpoints we can use for online racing will improve the game 100% for us racers.

Visual checkpoints mean you can look at the road, focus on the race, and not just watch the mini-map to make sure you are going the right way.

Having a rotating mini-map, or the option to pick what kind of mini-map you want would have been great too.

On the Big Surf Island Q&A on Totally 360.com Pete Lake is asked "Will there be any gameplay updates with this DLC? Such as the ability to place waypoints on the map to allow players to converge on an area more easily?"

What a great idea! This also leads to being able to set up our own online challenges. I know we can sort of do this anyway... in the same way that we can race on bikes just by saying to each other start at Wildcats and end up at the Windfarm.. but having it actually in the game engine seems so obvious I don't know why it wasn't included.

Thanks for the Blog Suf! and for inviting me to spew my 2 cents... I was hoping for a better racing experience, and when that was lacking a more rounded polished vision instead of the sandbox do it your way game which I struggle with. I need a bit more direction.

The things that are missing are more what is wrong with Paradise then the things that are in the game. I am having a blast playing today, the Island challenges were a lot of fun, although not much replay value as once you have done them once...

Anyway, what I wanted to mention in this comment was the promise of Calender events... what happened to that?? CG took the time to add a calender to the front end and this news feed but then they didn't do anything with it.  It just extends the game load time by about half an hour and is completely pointless IMO.

Thats all for now...

You know the ones, "someone" just scored a takedown, scored a 50 x multiplier on a stunt run, got a massive load of air time etc, a big warning sign written across the screen as you drive about, which just obscures your view as you drive around, now i know why it's there, it has to distracted you from doing what you are doing to give some bugger an advantage, for me I want the option to turn it off, just so I can get on enjoying what I am doing, everytime I see one flash up I lose concentration, crash or just get hugly dessip off, that it is in my way.

I already will know looking at the todays best or the scores written in that area, what someone is doing, why do i need this screen splash other than it is used in Gameplay to cause a distraction on purpose?

Maybe I'm just too hardcore, doing my own thing, that i need a heads up telling me what other people are doing, hey if someone does something awesum, they will tell me down the mic, since the VoiP is fixed, lol.

I am on a year and three months of playing BP and it remains the game I am most likely to pop into the PS3. That said, I really see so much more potential to this game. You've covered most things that I find bother me so rather than reiterate I'll just emphasize a few of your points:

Splashes: these need to move out of the main field of view or have an on/off switch. All of the information displayed on the screen needs to be reduced, or at least be user selectable.

Racing: I don't race in this game but I completely understand the frustration of racers. CG needs to do something to address the frustration of these folks as they represent an important part of their customer base. I'd even give racing another go if they intriduced blind matchmaking and random races. I'd probably still lose but I'd give it a shot.

Takedowns: I don't know how, but these need to be fixed. If it isn't technically possible to properly sync people's systems so that both see the same data and can therefore predict when and how takedowns will occur, then make it harder to take people down, or reduce the number of second that you loose control. I hope to never again here the phrase "Who the hell did I take down? There's nobody near me."

Fog: What can I say but get rid of it, or at least put in an on/off switch. I can put up with takedown jockeys in challenges, magically appearing traffic, wrecking on invisible object etc. Fog is one of th few things that will get me to simply turn off the game and walk away. From a technical standpoint the introduction of the fog to the environent is impressive. But it simple adds nothing positive to the game experience.

Cars/Colors/Customization: I don't need to tweak the suspension on every car, but I would like to make my cars a bit unique. The popularity of the color glitch indicates that many others do as well. Give me fewer cars (many of which most people never use) with more flexibility to control their appearance. I'd also like a favorites menu; I don't need to scroll through 100 cars to find the five I actually drive regularly.

BSI: I was incredibly excited about BSI. The potential I saw when I played the beta version back in September was huge! After having played on it for a few days I found myself back in the Airfield last night. BSI is incredible for what it is. But it's dissapointing for what it's not. What I was expecting and hoping for was a location where we could get bigger spins, more rolls, etc. What I've seen so far is lots of locations for stunts but nothing that beats what we had in the old city. It's a matter of quantity vs. quality. Most of the jumps are heavily limited by the run ups. For example compare the top of the Quarry to the split ramps on the top of the construction site on BSI. What really kills me is the two biggest jumps on BSI, the bridge and ski jumps, lack split ramps or anything to clip for spins. They are great jumps for air times and jump distances but I think they missed the mark.

I'm sure the telemetry they received showed a ton of people in the Airfield and at the Dam/Quarry area. What it apparently didn't show them is what they were actually doing in those areas. Not just jumps but spins and rolls.

Sadly the "if you see it you can drive it" tag line is less than accurate. I absolutely understand that you can't have a game without wreck zones. But there are so many areas that you can easily jump to that are wreck zones. The construction site is a great example. You can readily get onto many of the under construction floors but they are wreck zones.

The "new" cars were also disappointing to me. I now have two versions of three cars I'll never drive, the Olympus, the Spirit and the bootlegger. I do like the toy 88 special, the toy nighthawk and the two dust storms. Not sure on the street rod. Have to say that the diamond P12 was a disappointment. I actually completed 490 challenges for four separate IDs, partly for something to do, partly in anticipation of the rumoured prize. I love the P12 and it is my car of choice for challenges. I was hoping for a variation on it, say a carbon. What I got was improved stats and a paint job that will keep me from driving the thing. My tastes run to the more subtle. Could I just get a stripe that has the number 500 integrated into it?

Marketing/Public Relations: It seems as though CG has never quite gotten the hang of interacting with the hard core fans. Clearly their overall approach has worked given how many copies of the game they sold. But they never seemed to know how do deal with the criticism they received on the old forums and their reaction to it was handled poorly. If you invite comment you need to be prepared to receive it. When you make a mistake, admit it. In fairness, as one of the "Rai-Jin beta testers", as well as someone who put a fair amount of effort into the old CG forums, I'm still a bit bitter about how that all played out so my opinion in that regard should be considered with that in mind. Further, I fully recognize that many of the fans contributed heavily to that entire situation; CG is not solely to blame.

Overall: This is, without a question, my favorite game. Incredible graphics, terrific sense of speed and the best online experience of any game I've payed. I have spent a ridiculous amount of time playing it, taken days off from work for updates, made friends across the world (some of whom I've met in person), and generally been obsessed with it. It is, simply put, a phenominal game. But it can be much more. We'll see what the future brings.

Hhhmmm, perhaps "a samll bit to add" wasn't the most appropriate title!

I think my number one complaint from day one was how much S*** there is on the screen when online. Even when you don't have the stupid "so an so tookdown so and so" IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD (as you said Zomb), you still have crap taking up literally at least half of the screen. The B button doesn't do anything, right? Make the Today's Best crap a drop down menu with only my things appearing, and let me hit the B button when ever I want to to look at everyone elses stuff, then close it when I'm done. Between it and the minimap, you quite literally can't see anything on your right side when you have a fair amount of people online.

Ya get more spin from a broken tumble drier, and more rolls at a Tesco Express, that ya can get on the Island, and there are better jumps to do that sort of stuff on the Island. See Magurie Bend, or don't as it looks wrong from this angle?

I had the same reaction to the article on the CG site. People are hitting 2800 + spins at the airfield and 8x rolls at the quarry with no glitch. There is nothing comparable on the island that I've seen. You just have to wonder if they actually look at how people are playing the game beyond what the telemtry tells them.

SUFFUR's picture

...watch the community made videos, from Youtube or in the community site links.

So they knew what were were doing! I assume? They must know right?

I think the community took the game way beyond thier expectations, but maybe they could also think we were abusing what they have made, smashing into the side of the Dam and pushing the car spin physics or a-watcha-ma-call-it's-I-don't-know-what-but-i'll-pretend-you-do-even-if-i-fake-it-for-ya-type-of-thing, lol, to new hieghts or spins, lol, and bugger up the way you were expected to play, maybe?

What do I know, I'm Hard core fan or hard Core fan, a fan of cores that are hard, anyway, or am I?

But I do know that Revenge and Burnout 3, well the rest of the games really, got my heart pumping, hands sweating, and my adrenaline going, to the point I feared for my health for the first time in ages today, though I had sort of calmed down by the time I was invited to fill up a room in the Revenge Tourney, which I wanted to do, but was not really prepared for, but had fun, knowing I was almost as good as the winners, a few years ago now, and got throughly owned, but I digress once again, thats for another blog, at another time in the future.

There's lots of free-burn videos, stunt runs and hidding spot and pictures of great spin and rolls.

There are not many videos of racing, because not many people are doing it, as it is faulty, defunct, and just ssessip people off.

I enjoyed hn6's Road Rule videos, but how many 'takes' did he have to go throught to show some damn find speeding!

The main game was not really designed to race in, it can be, but the Island was so right, it worked in Single player really well, a lot of the others on the main land do too.

The Island's Check points and routes were well balanced, with alternate routes but still near competators, the corners were cuttable, and some sweet driving, drifting and jumping oppertunities, true it is a bit small, but the online would have lasted a bit longer after running different variations of routes, cars, time of day etc.

But stunt run wise the Island is choc-full of stunt run points, high scoring is easy, but some have got used to the Extreme Hot Rod to do stunt runs, at high speed and that is really hard to do in the confines that have been set up with some wreak zones, jump placements and inclines, as well as air space between the jumps. If the quarry was just a deep curved basin, with lots of in and outs and no objects in the way but split ramps and drops, it would be a stunt runners play ground for the big hitters.

I like stunt running on the Island but I normally run it in the Roadster that had a good pace to it, but has got slower with this update, so getting use to the Toy P12 88 Special, for it's air and spins, though it's a bugger when it hits a wall, it's so slow to reverse out of those situations, which kills a combo, quick if your not careful.

Anyway Criterion did a good play ground, it just not extreme mad elite enough is all, lol.

But still early days, someone may find a great spot, I know Kev and I have had fun looking.

Patience is something I taught myself, so I never know when it's going to run out?

I also though more people would have something to say on this tread, which can mean a few things, their still playing it, and love it which is good, moved on which is bad, sad but understandable, or no-one cares or is bothered, lol, for the Island or maybe even my views, but either way, no worries, mate!

But do say something, I am interested, I'm a lonely, sad man, that needs this, really I am, I have a cause, to find a great arcade racer, with amazing stuff going on it, that brings us all together again, including my new friends from Paradise, and we are all joined together in a hug of love and freindship and caring, really I want this, then it will spread across the universe, and we will all die happy and content.

Warning I don't take responsibility for making stuff up, it's my imagination it just goes where it wants, so I never lie in my world, but it's my truth in cheese that can help me sleep at night.

Goodnight, sleep well, I will try too.

Oh, Ichi good blog dude, I don't like bugs in my eye's either, but speed vs age vs agility vs surroundings (like a bug farm you would see them coming so be trained)vs they are bugs, so what do they care about your eye they just got thier feet wet from eye juice and then tihs themselves in your eye, seeing a giant eye ball look at them, while trying to trap them in with hairy eyelashes and a giant fingered hand to rub them out, trying to kill them, and they thought the headache from the crash was bad enough, lol.

(Back to Paradise: I thought someone would have mentioned the traffic by now?)

See my head is full of it, but New Island is a Volcano, and it has lots of rich deposites in it, so lots of man made caves, ways up, around, through, tunnels, caverns,  space to move as it's huge, with run ups and downs and around in and out, and space to jump 1000 yards, in and out of the crator warn smooth by lava and weather, with some races thrown in and around it, so not much traffic of the residentual kind, except routes to the tourist spots, to see in it, and around it, but also a large amount of water, from the steady rain it can get, but better than that fog, lol. And optional to turn to light rain, heavy or off etc etc. Right turn the lap top off time, bye.

Patience is something I taught myself, so I never know when it's going to run out?
