First screens from Criterions NFS?

Following up on this link to a story about the Make-A-Wish Foundation UK visiting Criterion studios, you can see Ben playing what may be the criterions NFS. Below is a blow up of the image, is this it, what do you think?

Criterion NFS

This is a quote from the story:

"Ben was even given a sneak preview into how the development was going on the next Need for Speed game; finishing with some game playing time with the experts – our Quality Assurance team who are responsible for the testing of our games."

I wonder how much more work there is to do on the game??? Will it be with us next year??? Maybe we should try getting hold of Ben for the inside scoop!

Hmmm... looks just like the driver profile screen from Need for Speed Shift. Oh noes.

Thanks for the correction Prophet, I did think it might be shift but haven't played it - the main reason I didn't think it could be shift was that I didn't think they would let the kid play a game they didn't make, it must have been to round off the experience. Again sorry, got a little bit excited at the thought of it.

I don't see why they would have him playing Shift, it is not a Criterion Games game... but it could be that the current build of CG's NFS is using the driver profile screen from Shift as CG may not have made that part of their game yet...????

Why would they be doing that?  This profile screen is what you see when you start a new game on Shift.  You can see that he is at level 1 and this is rating is "Aggressive" rather than "Precision".  When people first start shift, it can be very hard/different to drive and you usually knock people all over the place... giving you an "Aggressive" rating early on.  As you get better, your precision points usually go way up and your aggression points go down.

It's not like a loading screen we're talking about.  If Criterion were using this for their new game, it would mean that they are using Shift's engine rather than their making their own (or using their existing engine), right?  The kid obviously raced once at this point and the game recorded and gave him points for his aggressive driving.  Why would criterion be using the same driving rating system as shift?

While Shift is not a Criterion Games game, it is an EA game.  They do, from time to time, play games not made directly by them.  Hell, some Criterion staff have even been recently spotted playing Battlefield 1943.  I imagine they have all the Need for Speed games (and probably all EA games) available for play.  They've probably had to play through all the NFS games to figure out what to borrow from and what to stay away from.

Now I'm not saying that the kid didn't get to play some super secret early build of a new NFS, but this just isn't it.

Mmm this is interesting!!

The thought of criterion using that game engine would not inspire me to buy this at all. My opinion is that this is no way anything to do with CG. I shall wait for my usual saturday afternoon call and find out :)

its not the way you burnout, its the way it hurts when you lose

I kinda hope it is Shift then.  It's not a very inspiring screen shot either way. I am very much looking forward to seeing what CG's NFS does look like, and I really hope the fact that the kid in this story was playing with QA guys, means that it is closer to completion then we think!

Complete non story. Criterion aren't gunna show shit, from free islands to planes they are full of bullshit.
