EA TURNS UP THE HEAT WITH NEED FOR SPEED HOT PURSUIT
Cops and Racers + Hot Cars + Your Friends = Endless Competition

Guildford, UK – June 14, 2010 – Criterion reinvents Need for SpeedTM Hot Pursuit for the connected generation. Criterion Games, a studio of Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) announced today that the award-winning development team is making the latest installment in the renowned Need for Speed franchise. Inspired by the classic game of the same name, Criterion will reveal Need for Speed Hot Pursuit for the very first time today at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. Launching in November 2010, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit brings the franchise back to its roots with intense cops vs. racer chases. Criterion also ups the ante with the introduction of an all-new online network called Need for Speed Autolog where players compare racing stats and automatically get personalized gameplay recommendations from their friends– a feature that is poised to transform online racing for the connected generation.

Need for Speed Hot Pursuit players will experience the thrill of the chase and the rush of the escape as they play through full careers as both a cop and a racer – solo or connected. The high speed busts and heart-stopping getaways are all connected via Need for Speed Autolog. This network not only connects friends for epic head-to head pursuits and races, but also enables players to compare performances and stats, thereby setting the stage for the ultimate in social competition.

Craig Sullivan, Creative Director of the game said, “At Criterion, we’ve been playing Need for Speed since it was first introduced on 3DO. We are honored and excited by the opportunity to reinvent the franchise for today’s connected audience. Our goal has been to create cops vs. racers pursuits that are so fun, fast and exciting it really brings to life the adrenaline and intensity of the high speed cop pursuit experience with your friends”.

Developed by Criterion Games, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit will be available on November 19th 2010 on the Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and PC. Need for Speed Hot Pursuit will also be available on the WiiTM and is being developed by Exient.

This looks like the best need for speed in a looong time... It really looks like a great remake of the original nfs's, with some added treats. the newer ones just dont have the classic nfs feel.

Cube's picture

It looks like a great mixture of classic Need for Speed and classic Burnout, with some stunning graphics. Hopefully there are plenty of game modes.

From the short amount I've seen so far I already want  to pre-order the game.

Quite a serious interview with Craig Sullivan and Matt Webster. They give more details about NFS: Hot Pursuit. There are two different progression streams in the game; Cop and Racer. Epic drives, hot pursuits, exotic cars, exotic locations!

Here is the linky: Criterion Games Gamespot Interview

And in case you didn't know NFS: Hot Pursuit will be an open world experience.

ZombieTron's picture

This is probably a better linky than the one above as it shows the video interview and has a hands on write up by Gamespot.

I am posting this link before I have read it all.

ITS OPEN WORLD!!!!! **** YEAH!!! I saw some gameplay and an interview on GT this morning, and it was on a highway, and it looked massive, i sort of thought:'its too big for just a closed game'

But how will they fit the desert, forest, mountains and sea together? (the desert is the most strange)

ZombieTron's picture

This is the latest tweet from @CriterionGames    "Over 100 miles of open road. Ten and a half square miles. Four times larger than Paradise City."

Thanks!!! I havent been so hyped for a game in ages!!!

The last great NFS game... (IMO)   NFS : HP 2 ...  They started going in the right direction again with Shift.  Now Criterion is developing the next NFS.  I'm torn.  They gave us a string of GREAT racing games.  Paradise was a marvelous technical achievement (technically).  I dove through it, and in the end, I still spent double more hours back on the other burnout titles afterwards.   The open world just wasn't my thing (personal preference).  It doesn't feel like a racing game.  It feels like a mixture of ideas, a game that doesn't know what it is.  I'll give any racing game a fair shake, Criterion has a great batting average, but I'm very leary about Criterion 'open worlding' NFS HP... Paradise was technically great ... but ... that doesnt always make for great games ... it will be interesting to follow how this turns out.  Criterion has 'sense of speed' nailed down in racing games.  I really hope they can pull this one off.

There is another gameplay video up on Gametrailers, here is the linky:

http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-2010-need-for/101789

It shows much more of the open world aspect to the gameplay, definitely looks like the Paradise engine to me. Looks too much like Paradise 2 for me to love it... but I will still get it and play it just like I did with Paradise. I don't think it will have the longevity I am looking for in a game. Unless they really nail it and make it feel like Road Rage on Burnout 3!

Loved your comment Eezo, that pretty much sums up how I feel too. I think NFS:HP has more of an idea of what it is that Burnout Paradise had, but I am just not keen on the Open World gameplay.

Here are some more hands on links too: (I will add to this post as I find more!)

I heard it OK, the best bit for me was where he said "No Right Angle Turns"! It sounds like all of the roads are going to be long and sweeping, no city grids like Paradise City!

Hurrah!!

Sometimes I love racing in the city, downtown tracks in the Burnout series are some of my favourites. But right angle turns on tight streets are real speed killers!

I'm not sure how much seeing people play the game badly will sell it... but I think it looks more Burnoutesque the more I see!

If you haven't visited it for a while, it is well worth going back to www.CriterionGames.com as it has now had an NFS:HP overhaul. There is a lot of new content, and a bit of a new look to CG's official site.

Also, check out the NFS Podcast with loads of talk about the E3 showing of NFS:HP http://bit.ly/nfsPC36t

If you were in the US you could have gone to one of these events... think I may have commented about it somewhere above.. anyway... here is a vid of all the beautiful people checking out NFSHP in NY!

Same as yesterday, click to see:

NFS:HP Pack Shots

I will give my 2 cents tho.... the packaging looks cheap and nasty, but it kinda gives an idea of what the game is like I guess.

I don't spend too much time looking at the box art anyway.

Xandu's picture

Don't like the orange. Red would have been better. Looks like someone puked all over the car. Apart from that it is ok. I don't really care about the box art as I will buy the game no matter what it looks like.

Copied and pasted from EA's press release:

EA ANNOUNCES NEED FOR SPEED HOT PURSUIT LIMITED EDITION
COLOGNE, GERMANY – August 17, 2010 – Criterion Games, a studio of Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced a Limited Edition version of Need for SpeedTM Hot Pursuit, this holiday’s hottest action racing game. Need for Speed Hot Pursuit is bringing the intensity of cops vs. racers to the connected generation. The Limited Edition features six of the world’s fastest cars that players can use to race and chase their friends, right out of the box. Available at participating retailers at the same price as the standard version, the Limited Edition packs added value for speed junkies, while supplies last.

The Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Limited Edition delivers six exotic cars; Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, Ford Shelby GT500, Audi TT RS Coupé, Chevrolet Camaro SS, Porsche Cayman S and Dodge Challenger SRT8. The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione and Ford Shelby GT500 are only available in the Limited Edition – and will not be available at any other time. For those players who miss the opportunity to pick up the Limited Edition, the Audi TT RS Coupé, Chevrolet Camaro SS, Porsche Cayman S and Dodge Challenger SRT8 can be unlocked by leveling up in the game.

These high-powered racing machines give players a day-one advantage when they compete – and beat – their friends on the open road. Whether playing in real-time live multiplayer or challenging and comparing races with friends offline, Limited Edition owners have an edge over their friends – an especially important benefit since the game is all about the connected social experience. At the heart of Need for Speed Hot Pursuit is a groundbreaking network called Autolog that tracks cop and racer performances and uses those statistics to generate fierce competition between friends by dynamically changing the way they play the game. By having the fastest cars on the road, players can challenge their friends, destroy their times and bask in the glory of their humiliation.

Seems like GameStop here in Norway are not doing the Limited Edition so we will be preordering two copies of the normal edition for 20p + trading in 4 games that all were bought for less than £10 each. I think £40.20 for two copies of a game that retail for £59.99 each is a pretty good deal!

Edit: Seems like GameStop are doing the Limited Edition after all. We pre-ordered two today for the same price as above.

I was lucky enough to get to play on NFS/HP over the weekend, and can I safely say Burnout is back, It may come under the guise of Need For Speed but under the name and all the branding is a pure Burnout game, Speedo, Boost, Combos for dangerous driving, Drifting, smashing your opponents into walls, It looks the dogs bollocks.

Just one little reservation, I was speaking to one of the marketing guys about the game so I don't know how accurate the info he gave is, I quizzed him about about online multiplayer and leaderboards and such like, To which he replied, " The only online racing will be with people on your friends list, there will be no open lobbies and no global leaderboards", "its all about competing with ones friends". So if this info is correct and you have no friends online, you ain't playing multiplayer. This being said, the guy was from marketing and to be honest he seemed a bit clueless.

On the plus side I got 2 free NFS/HP S.C.P.D t-shirts and 2 air fresheners for my car, I might Donate one to zombs for her vast collection of Burnout stuff, if she is very nice to me and I can be arsed posting it off to the other side of the world.

ok i finally downladed the demo... its fantastic, but i dont like that they pulled a cheap trick to have a friend get the demo to play as a racer. All my friends are still in the COD vortex, so theres no chance I'll convince them to get a racing game demo.

servers arent working either...

I take back whatever I said, after playing that roadsters race, well, powersliding that beautiful BMW around the edge of a cliff in dreamy HD has made me fall in love with the game. I can't wait to race the *drool* lamborghinis and Alfa Romeos... Criterion has really outdone themselves this time. It's Burnout with less arcade steering, and a sprinkling of NFS.
