Neophobia - Unwillingness to try new things or break from routine.
I think the problem here is one of expectation, because this is the next iteration in the burnout series we expect more of the same and not a total reinvention. If this game was called anything else we would probably be very excited by the things that are being talked about.
It is getting slightly depressing reading about how people are giving up on a series that they love because, in essence, they are scared of change. Racers upset by a lack of set tracks, Crashers upset by a lack of set crashes, Road ragers upset by……..actually these guys should be in heaven.
If you want a game with all the crash junctions or racetracks you know and love, there is a deceptively simple solution already provided to you by those kind folks at Criterion¹ (burnout team rocks!(one for the podcast fans out there)).
If the reason you are not looking forward to it is because it is a totally new experience, and not “more of the same“, how can you say you will not enjoy it - without having first experienced it?
I for one cannot wait to try it out and I may be disappointed and head back to Revenge, but I have yet to play a Criterion game that I did not love, and I find it hard to believe that they would make such a huge mistake.
It should also be noted that whether we like to admit it or not we do not represent the average Burnout fan, if we were to look in from the outside I think we would be viewed as the “Loony obsessive diehards”(LOD), and not as I am sure we would like to believe the concerned fans of the series. If you disagree with being called an LOD take a look around, you are on a site dedicated to a computer game that maybe a few thousand still play on a regular basis. I for one am happy to be an LOD, for Revenge at least, as I frikkin love that game. The cool thing is though, if I love Paradise I can always come back for a visit with all the neophobics on Revenge.
¹ Press the button with the triangle and the line on your 360/ps2 take out whatever is in the tray², place your copy of Burnout Revenge onto tray press button again - enjoy.
² Ignore this advice if Burnout Revenge is already in the drive.

LOD BurnoutAholic I am
Yup, put me in the LOD column.
I think your onto something here. I totally forgot about all the other people that play the game that probably aren't as obsessive about Burnout as alot of us are. Criterion are making the game for the masses and they are likely to really enjoy the game. It just wouldn't be very good business to make a product thats tailored around the wishes of a choice few. I'm still looking forward to Paradise and like you were sort of saying, I'll always have my copies of Revenge.

Fear of the Unknown
I think most of the reactions are due to misunderstanding what Burnout Paradise is going to be like. I don't quite see how anyone can still be so unsure as we have a load of gameplay videos from E3 and the shows since, and there is the podcast and mailbag at Criterion Games own website to ask any questions about the game.
A lot of Burners seem to be hearing one thing about Paradise and judging it on just that instead of considering every aspect of it as a whole NEW game.
But maybe I am just a Loony Obsessive Diehard who would love any Burnout game just because of the title??? I think this maybe true as long as its a Burnout game that has been developed by the Burnout team at Criterion, cos they Rock!

Re hn6's blogg thingy
Oh dear I feal that I have to reply to this thread if only to clear my name, I do not consider myself to be a fanboy of any game, I do not belive that I am addicted to Burnout all though it is the game I play the most, heck I thought it was made by EA and that Criterion was a make of a car, I do not consider my self to be a burnoutaholic mearly a guy who is to lazy to find out more about something for himself, I do not consider myself to be a LOD, I do not fear the unknown or the dark or silence, hope that helps, Oh and I have a suicidal habbit of posting anti game info on a fansite..

My fear.
My fear is, having to get use to a new driving style, instead of sliding 'bricks', going have to contend, with four wheels, doing the drift? Also, yes this will be awesome, for road rage, but if the in game physics, is like Revenge, the road rages are not going to last that long, I would rather have a battle on my hands, than fart in the general direction of another car to take them down, but then again, they might not be dead in this version, so they spawn, to be farted down again? Though going by the footage, the cars seem to have some weight behind them, so maybe it won't be so easy? Otherwise, I’m just in fear of being a newbee, on a new game, where I’ll be someone’s bytch?
But I am looking forward to playing with what Criterion has to offer, they have made games that I have always played, for varied times, and there is always something in them, that will keep me amused for many hours. Setting up a Road Rage, around the whole loop of the map, with pit stops for smoke breaks, then start off again with the smashing and mayhem and hopefully not the farting in the general direction.
On another note me and Broken, sorry, Broken and I, played Halo 2 last night and had some great fun, a lot of sexually repressed gamers on that game, a few muted and feedback sent, sorry, but you act like a Pen, you get silenced, and Broken, gave me a compliment on my flag capturing skills, which ended the game early, disallowing him his usual kill count. Sorry Broken.
Some of his words were, right killed some people, time to get that flag, head in direction of flag, Suffur pops over the hill with the flag in his hands, like it’s a Sunday afternoon walk, Broken covers Suffurs back, another capture, I think we did 3 captures, in less time than it takes to drive 4 Warthogs and back without the Hogs( well I drove one on the first flag, went in got the flag, came out,(oh err missus) jumped in the passenger side and had to wait for a driver, doh, before I got drove home, {last date I go on with that guy, and all I got was a lousy flag}), p.s. Broken got a flag too, even with his kill count, (how does he find the time? With all the hot projectile butchery), (though we did have some guy in the air, giving great air cover, just in case the fly guy reads this and I don't give some credit. And there was 3 other people on the team, including, bad date guy, May plasma burn his genitals.)
My kill counts were poo(r), but then again I did have a flag in my hand, or was driving a 'Hog', now that’s a car, with some established, fun physics. Since Halo 3 is, sort of out (Thank you Argus and Tisco) and people picking it up on the release day, like the rest of the world can, this game will be played more, than Halo 2, but it may mean, that Halo 2 will not be so busy, and may not have so many, 'to be mute, sexually repressed gamers'. Credit should be given to Broken, for using the Sexually Repressed Card, as it shut up most in the room, except the ones who do get sex and laughed. Anyway, will be playing Halo 3, because I like the video edit function, and Forge, the Dungeon Masters tools to cause more mayhem, in multiplayer(and tank dropping). Oh and to those Rainbow 6'ers I play with, when you do go back to Halo, if you do, watch out, the game is a lot faster, I had some moments where, my head was spinning so fast, that I killed Broken at least 3 times in confusion. To which all I can say is oops, sorry, will try harder next time, lol. And if there are any Pen’s, I will mute; it’s so easy to do!
