So with the 5th anniversary of Xbox live (sorry all the PS Burnoutaholics...) I thought I would post about something that has become a little bit of a pet hate recently..
what is it about some people.. they just seem to buy games not for the enjoyment but to rack up as many lamerscore points as they can before they can trade it in and get the next piece of crap that has a thousand points they can get..
come on.. some people have more of an interest in playing good games.. and when they are good they stick with them.. was it wrong of MickySoft to start this addiction.. and even worse when a fan site copies the concept which makes some people spend a lot of time in writing utter bollocks just to gain an extra point or three.. no names mentioned but you can probably guess who I'm talking about.. just take a look at the addiction meter to find out
so I have friends who have lamerscores of 20,000+ and im thinking why.. yes some of them are very good gamers and significantly better than me and can actually achieve the 1000 points for a game.. and no its not that im jealous as I am about to break the 10,000+ point barrier and I enjoy the games I like and persevere with those I dont for the sake of my friends list..
anyone out they wanting to admit to being a lamerscore whore?? or any you want to name and shame..
Rant over...
theres a thin line between genius and insanity, I think I've fallen off....

Lamerscore whores...
At least if you get stuck on a game, you can ask said Lamer to get help, as they have finished the game, or the spot where you hit B, a couple of times to get 1000 points, Avatar is one of those games. But most of my scores come from a Lamer player, who likes to show off their skills, by spreading the points about, on people consoles, lol.

Gamerscore Obsession
It's not only gamers who care about gamerscore, your 360 cares about it too!
Here is an excerpt from my 360's Blog:
"What is really good is that every day played is another chance to catch up to Xandu and that 13,192 score... Make it happen ZombieTron!! "

I happen to agree...
I don't even have 3000 gamerscore yet. The only game I have full points for is Geometry Wars. Honestly, I could get more achievements if I wanted to, but for me, fun comes from either relaxing with a deep solo game like Oblivion or competing with friends online, not some random points on my gamercard.
(...as long as "competing with friends" doesn't entail stupid crap like free-for-all Swords on Halo 3. )

Good Gamerscore and Bad Gamerscore
From my blog:
People who play games solely for Gamerscore are apes. There is no point to waste time just for Gamerpoints. That being said, it is respectable to have Gamerscore for the games that you play and devote time to.
I value having a high Gamerscore per game, and achievements, rather than having a high Gamerscore overall. Any ape can get Gamerscore for Cars, Avatar, and other games that require no skill. On the contrary, it makes your gamertag a little more reputable if you have high Gamerscore for games that actually require skill.
The way I see it is that no one can see your in game rank outside of the game itself; but through your Gamercard, they get an idea. 1000 Gamerscore for a game generally denotes skill at said game.
I'm putting a lot of thought into this... hopefully some of you will understand my viewpoint. For example, (to illustrate my point), you probably don't know that I have 21,000+ kills in Gears; however, you can see that I have the full 1250 points. You may not know that I was a Top 100 racer in Burnout, or have a Trueskill of 21 in Forza and was formerly ranked in the Top 1000 for Time Trials; however, you CAN see that I have the full Gamerscore for both of those games. You most likely don't know that I am a Colonel Grade 2 in Halo 3, but you can see that I have the full Gamerscore for that game. And you definitely don't know that I'm on my second Prestige mode in COD4 with 13,000 kills and a 1.44 k/d ratio, and am also ranked #10 gloabally for Mile High Club and #70 for All Ghillied Up, but you can see that I have the full Gamerscore, which denotes skill at the game (Mile High Club on Veteran is ridiculous!)
So, there is good Gamerscore, and there is bad Gamerscore. The reason it's there on the Gamercard is to help with identity on XBL or something, to let other players know what you play.

to each their own
As long as it doesn't take anything away from the game I don't mind them. I do like seeing the alert show up on my screen after something cool happens on the game. Or something just as normal as finishing a level that I was planning on doing i suppose. And at times I know that while I'm at a certain part in a game, if I wander over into a certain spot slightly out of my way and do something out of the ordinary I'll go for an achievement but thats about it. I personally would rather spend a bunch of time hunting down things like the skulls in Halo cuz those actually change the gameplay and open up more ways to play the game. I think they give you achievements for those though... not sure, but either way, skull hunting was more rewarding for me than maxing out gamerscore. If I were to try to go for 1000/1000 every time I turned my 60 on it would take a lot of fun out if it for me (slight case of OCD). But thats just me, some people really like the achievements and thats great for them. Since they are just add ons and don't really change the way the game is played (so much) then there is one more reason for people to enjoy / replay their games and thats great. But what does really drive me up the wall is when gamerscore starts to mess with the way I wanna play the game. Some kid hops into a room and wants you to let him kill you 5 times in a row or something.... EFF OFF! I didn't buy this game and pay for XBL for your enjoyment, you're gonna have to work for those just the same way I did, and I'm gonna enjoy making it as difficult as possible for you.
I might be a bit on the paranoid conspiracy theorist side going into this next rant but just go with me on this one...
Soooo, we all know about things like 360voice.com and other things that are available to the average joe. Sites and tools that can show you very detailed info about games you've played, achievements earned, compare your tag to other players, see what the most popular games / achievements are and things like that. If things like that are available to anyone who has an internet connection would it be a big leap to assume that game developers have similar or even more in depth tracking tools? I know that large companies love facts and figures. I would hate to imagine that some could be planning out what they want to do with one of their next big blockbusters and go crunching numbers to see what most gamers have been up to and lo and behold..... They love going for 60 kill combos on Avatar!!!! What a great idea! Lets start making tons of games like that!!! I hope i'm only imagining this. On the other hand, they might be able to gleen what parts of games weren't very fun to play knowing that noone could really be bother to go after the achievemnt cuz they were having to much fun racing their Nixon backwards around the track.... I want absolutely random crazy achievements to unluck in the games that reward the player who really spins the hell out of that disc ya know?
