It is after all.... only a demo

Dang holy cow is this demo getting slammed.  But then again, people are more likely to voice complaints than praise about any given topic.  The people who don't like it will post about it,  the peopl who do like it will be busy playing it.  I think since there IS an open world where noone is holding your hand and telling you what to do, where to go, and what goal to accomplish most gamers are kind of dumb-founded.  What to do now?  Wheres all the high speed racing?  And since it IS only a demo,  with only one race where you're actually competing against other cars, and on top of that a whole bunch of space where there isn't alot of structure or direction, people are assuming thats what the whole game is going to be like.  Just pull up the map in the demo!  Look at the intersections, every one is marked with different colors, even I can make the leap here and assume there is going to be alot more to do than just crash through signs (which I could care less for anyways) and it will be very easy to get something going.  Since theres only one race in the demo and all that open space people are getting dis-heartened.  Compare this demo to alot of other demos, they really did give us alot more with this one.  And by the way, did the Revenge demo really honestly cook that fast?  Was it comparable to the full game Revenge Racer style?  Even though I do appeciate this demo, I think it might have been better recieved if they had offered less to do in the demo?  Does that make sense?  It might be too much of a transition?  I think with this demo they wanted to show off alot of the new stuff / gadgets / toys for the game,  we already know how to race right?  If the demo had been centered around some other aspect of the game people would be complaining about   "Wheres this open world everyones been talking about? What a bunch of crap! we want to see this freeburn with friends thing they were talking about"  No matter whats in a demo, people will complain.

And I really wish people could use their imaginations a little bit.  The 8 car race in the demo is what we'll be able to do with our friends,  and it will be fun, and much faster.  Check the stats on the car for the demo before you select it.... SPEED = 2/10,  BOOST = 1/10,  STRENGTH = 5/10.  I hope not too many people base their opinions of the handling, feel, and essence of Paradise off of just one car in the game (probably one of the slowest ones by the way).

They are really kicking the crap out of this on the xbox forums and I can understand how alot of long time fans are not jumping for joy after the demo,  nobodys handing the next race event to them.  But everyone is entitled to their own opinion and alot of people have been long time hardcore fans of the series.  This is ALOT different for a Burnout game.  I believe some haven't even tried the race and might think racing will be alot less prevalent in Paradise.  Its just a demo!  One race that you can't go at with friends like you'll be able to do in the full game.  Plus the demo shows off alot more extras that might be throwing people off.  Just cuz the Billboards are there doesn't mean anyones going to make you jump through them.  I've gotten to the point of just going into a private chat with a friend, both of us load up the demo and don't join up, then I direct them to the race and the (burning lap?).  I'll point out a few things like how the car flips the turn signals/blinkers during a race for a good turn to take,  the street signs move towards the center of the screen to show how close the next intersection is coming up,  the street signs flash with the blinkers on the car for the turns,  you have a compass that shows where the next point is.  If you go into freeburn right away most people miss that stuff and think the game is the worst setup in history.  After they've seen those and we hook up in freeburn everyone of them have liked it.  The friends of mine that jump right into online sessions don't like it cuz random people pop into the game and haven't figured out how to filter them, or they don't know what to do so they miss alot of it and wind up driving around aimlessly, doing bull fight impressions with their e-brakes.

I'm not writing any of this to upset anyone who didn't like the demo.  I can understand how people are not overly impressed with it.  I think its good for people to voice their opinions on things, if they agree with the subject or not.  And alot of the most vocal people have been long time fans of the series and have every right to voice their opinion.  I'm just trying to say to the people who are not happy about it, Its just a demo, its only a taste, there is alot more out there.  Just trying to give them a reason not to feel let down because the game isn't here yet.

On the flip side, I'm looking forward to getting on there, cracking a beer and rolling around with my friends and seeing how much trouble I can cause.

I do think that most of the backlash is due to people not getting it yet.

Heck when I played the full game at Criterion it took nearly all weekend for me to get it! and I still can't Flat Spin to save my embarrassment in an online challenge!

Having it as an open world online demo may have caused some of the anger too, I never take a game online until I am a little familiar with it, but as soon as I got Paradise downloaded I had 3 different online invites and going online with it straight away probably isn't the best way to see the game for the first time.

This is a NEW game and the rules have changed, we all need to take a little time to learn that now there are no rules! You can do what you like, when you like in a seamless open world. Thats an alien concept to Burnout, but when you get it, its Awesome!

I kinda just want to repeat everything you just said Eezo, but its real late and thats a waste of everyones time, so I will just say good blog, and good night!

Nice write, good read. Try a I-88 race, and Marked man, 3 chase 1 till takedown, then chase the downer, its a good way of using the lay of the land, to get going.

Patience is something I taught myself, so I never know when it's going to run out?

But after all this is just a small Demonstration of the game and not its full version so yeah I am going to say the The Demo bores me it sucks big time in my eyes, it does not matter how many times I play its just the same hum drum for me, I want to love it but something is missing the passion is not there, I am still looking forwards to the full game thou and still have it on pre-order, after all I was wrong with skate.

one more point for me

Every time I'm playing it it just gets better and better, although I still have that nigling feeling that something is missing - but as I've said elsewhere for a game we are not sure of its definately taking up a lot of my time. Have you tried drifting up at the club, or around the dog statue - both good fun especially if there are a few of you trying the same thing. Can't help but be enthused for the full game with all the content.

Oooh yeah, great ideas.  I tried em out when I got home from work this morning.  Lots of fun.  I had two other friends in the room who had previously mentioned that they weren't really impressed with the demo.  After doing a couple XambiSuff-88 Drag races we were all haveing a good ol time.  'One more, one more!'  I'm sure the full game is gonna rock.

A couple things I really liked about the 88 race is that If you get taken out going down the first stretch to the booths you'll be a little bit behind and driving head on (at a much higher speed) into the person who took you out after they loop back through the toll booths.... great opportunity for some pay back.  Also if its a close race when your at the toll booths, you're not really sure if theres going to be someone behind "door number three" plowing into you as you loop around.  A couple times someone got knocked off the freeway but still was able to figure a way to get back through the booths and get a close finish on the way back.  And theres that little ramp that you can boost off of near the starting line a few times to fill your boost bar up so everyone has the same start.  The takedown physics are definetly a lot tougher at high speeds in a race vs. low speeds in freeburn.  There were quite a few battles down that stretch,  full wheel turn knock em into the wall and they just nail you right back.  Lots of pinballing between the barriers and the other racers.  Good stuff, can't wait for the full game.

I didn't think of it till afterwards but I was thinking of trying like a Halo 3 style 'infection' type marked man thing. Funny thing is its actually called Zombie in H3.  One person starts out as the zombie, hit-man, whatever you wanna call em. Ya know - just to make things easier, you could have Zombietron always start as the zombie  .   After taking someone down, that person also becomes a zombie, and it keeps going.  So you'll eventually have 3 zombies chasing down one person.   Imagine what that would be like once all of Paradise is opened up and you have 7 people chasing you trying to take you down?  Gotta figure out a way to remember whos who though.  Is it to much to dream there might be a way?

The demo just has too much open space for most people *edit, open space is not a bad thing* and people are assuming that billboards and barrell rolls are all thats going to be in the final game.  I have faith...  It'll be GUD

I hope for your sakes and for most of the BO community that your right Zombie cause like I said before the burden is on Criterion to impress me now.....

Think of it this way though, if you dont ever see us on Paradise, now youll have a new set of people to join in and play cause I can already see half of the small BO community will be gone from Paradise......and the ones who like it now I hope for their sakes they will stay with the game for more than 6 months.......

I really like your idea about the 'infection' type marked man thing. I think we have to try that in the demo. Should not be too hard to remember whos who with only 4 people.

Nice one Eezo, I like it too!!

People are calling this a "sandbox game" I don't like that term really, but it is a game that you can play however you want to and having the imagination to play different games is what will make Paradise!
