How Online Road Rage should be...

The best incarnation of online Road Rage IMO is in Burnout 3: Takedown. It had all the right ingredients, and the takedown physics were spot on. I loved nothing more then being on the Blue team in my Super Assassin, running as fast as I can away from a horde of Red Euro Circuit Racers.

In Paradise, it's not quite the same.

Instead of all racers starting in the same place, we all start wherever we are on the map.

Instead of the blue team earning boost and the red team having infinite boost, the blue team has not boost at all.

Instead of all going in the same direction, you can go wherever you like, the blue team can take many different routes to get to the check points and finishing line.

It is no longer a game of chase, but it is more like a game of cat and mouse, Road Rage in Paradise is not the high speed intense close battle that it was in Burnout 3: Takedown.

This could easily be changed, with 4 simple steps:

1) Everybody starts in the same place, on a starting line.

2) The Blue Team gets a few seconds headstart.

3) The Blue Team can earn boost, Red keeps infinite boost.

4) We are all heading for the same destination in the same direction.

With these changes I would play Road Rage a lot more then I do now in Burnout Paradise.

Both of these events lack urgency in Paradise and a lot of that would be solved by starting everyone in the same spot.

For Road Rage I would also eliminate the checkpoint. With a single destination most players will be following the shortest route so you'd maximize the number of cars in the same area. I would think that would make it a lot more exciting.

A lot of marked man events end with no one scoring a takedown because everyone is so scatterred across the map. Others have at least one person camped out in a hiding spot. Starting everyone in a single spot would reduce the frequency of both these outcomes.

Before I start either of these events, I usually set up a challenge to get everyone together. For example, jumping in the quarry/airfield/dead mans edge/on the beach, drifting in the stock car track... you get the idea. That way everyone is in a similar area at the start of the Road Rage/Marked Man and anyone who runs away to hide in a corner is usually the only one who doesn't score any points.
Another good game is to get everyone into the quarry or airfield and tell them not to leave the area. Then you do the entire marked man while everyone is in the quarry (or airfield). You've really got to be careful because any incorrect braking or turning and you're gone! As long as you get people up for the fun of it, it's always hilarious and infuriating at the same time.
