There have been 3 Burnout games to feature Road Rage as an online game mode, but only one of them really worked. Here I look at why Burnout 3: Takedown is the best online Road Rage in the Burnout series;
Burnout 3: Takedown online Road Rage was one of the most popular, if not the most popular online game mode for that game.
There were 2 teams, Red v Blue, Blue races and Red chases. Each team starts on the same starting grid of the race track, the Blue team in pole position and getting a few seconds headstart. The Red team then sets chase with infinite boost. If the Blue team get to the finish line without being taken out they win, the Reds have to eliminate all of the Blue team (by taking them down!) to win.
The Blue team could also crash themselves out of the competition, too many crashes and you would go Damage Critical! one more crash and it's game over! Once eliminated the Blue team members become ghosts and are able to drive through traffic cars, try to protect their team mates and takedown or put off the Red team as much as they can.
I always played (well pretty much always) on the Blue team. The Blue team could still earn boost. I loved the thrill of the chase and the battles that we would have around the track. The satisfaction of getting a takedown on a Red team member when you are on the Blue team was sheer joy! Being on the Blue team with a great Red team chasing me down was the adrenalin thrill that kept me coming back to this game.
There weren't any (many) alternate routes, so all players were on the same track, there was no where to hide... only the finish line to run to.
This, and the fact that the takedown system allowed for fair battles is why Burnout 3: Takedown is the best online Road Rage in the Burnout series.
