Burnout Paradise and Xbox 360 Achievements

This subject has been bugging me ever since CG announced the Party Pack achievements and trophy lists, then the DLC cars came out with trophies for PS3 but no achievements for Xbox 360.

Now, we know Cops and Robbers has 8 trophies for PS3 and only 3 Xbox 360 Achievements.

Criterion Games line on this is that Microsoft limit the number of achievements they can use within a game, this comes from the FAQ over at CriterionGames.com;

How come there are new PlayStation 3 Trophies but no new Xbox360 Achievements?

Microsoft put a limit on the number of Achievements a game can award. Sony don't put the same limitation on Trophies.

I have since been trying to find out what this limit is, with limited success. I know there is a limit on the amount of GamerScore available and have read the official rules for achievements over at the GamerScore Blog HERE but there is no mention of a limit of number of Achievements a game can award.

So, what is the limit?

I have looked at past games to see what the maximum amount has been previously, and The Orange Box has 99 different achievements. This would make sense as the upper limit as you can only have 100 friends on your list, 100 recent players, so having the same amount (or very close too) for the achievement list makes sense.

Some people think that as Orange Box is a special case, being more than one game in the box, that they were given special priviledges. But, this is the only guide I have to go on as to what a maximum number of Achievements allowed is.

Pretty much all of the other talk about achievements focus's on the amount of gamerscore available, not the actual number of different Achievements.

I'm sure I read somewhere that there is no limit to the number of achievements, only to the amount of gamerscore, and the gamerscore blog would certainly seem to indicate that this is the case. But, if there is no limit (or if the limit is 99) why doesn't Burnout Paradise for the 360 have equivalent Achievements for ALL of the PS3 Trophies in DLC?

Until I get an answer, or until the Island is announced with a minimal amount of Achievements for stupidly high gamerscore points, I will let it go.. but if anybody has any actual facts about the limits for the number of different Achievements available for CG to use for DLC please let me know!

or Yes! Criterion Games could have put in equivalent achievements for ALL of the PS3 trophies but they didn't so I'm not happy!

Thanks to Mcmax for sending me a link to Kotaku over the weekend, as it finally gives a maximum number for Achievements for 360 games.

The maximum number is much higher then those in Burnout Paradise. 80 Achievements out of the box (Orange Box being the exception). And a further 10 Achievements for each DLC pack. Why CG has only put in 3 achievements for each DLC pack is beyond me! Here are the new articles on this subject:

I asked Matt Webster on Twitter:

ZombieTron@TheWebsterHoff so I finally know the maximum achievements allowed for 360: http://digg.com/u11pri so why don't you use more? Thanks, Zombs

And this was the response:

TheWebsterHoff@ZombieTron We work within guidelines established directly with Microsoft. If we were able to do more, we would.

Which doesn't really make any sense if the guidelines from MS are 250gs per DLC pack over up to 10 achievements... so I am still confused!

I was having another look around the web today to see if there was anything new or any further confirmation of the Xbox360Achievements.org story.. I found this link from the Official Xbox Magazine HERE where they report the news from the Xbox360Achievements.org story as tho even they don't know what the official rules are??? I would have thought they would be able to get confirmation from Xbox direct as they are the Official magazine? So, it seems like this may all be internet hooey and we may never get to the truth about what the actual rules for achievements are, or what the guidelines are that CG are following...

My search for the truth continues...

I've often thought that CG views the XBOX 360 as the red-headed stepchild of consoles. Most, if not all, of the times that they show in-game footage or mention controls, they refer to the PS3 version. And after seeing how they deny us achievements with the add-on packs, citing "limits", I am almost certain of it. Legendary Cars, no achievements, Toy Cars, no achievements, Boost Specials, no achievements, and now only 5 achievements on the island vs 10 PS3 Trophies. If there were limits, as they say, how were they able to add them to the island at all? Hmmm?

This is still one of my favorite games, but come on, Criterion. Make with the achievements already.
