I am still reeling from the decision that MS have taken to discontinue Xbox Live for original Xbox and original Xbox games. I just listened to the latest Major Nelson podcast HERE where the decision is discussed briefly.
Both e and Stepto who recorded the show sound upset by the decision, and more upset that they are unable to tell us the reasons for it... what cool stuff is coming thanks to the closedown, due to an NDA.
I have been thinking about what could be coming.... and I can't think of anything that makes up for losing Original Xbox Live completely.
As we are all paid up members of Xbox Live, I feel that we should have a say on the future of the service, especially on big decisions like this one.
I think MS should have given us the choice, they should have told us what cool stuff we would get if Original Xbox Live is closed down, and then let us vote on it. One gold member, one vote. To see if the majority wants the cool stuff that can't happen as Xbox Live is now, or if we want Original Xbox Live to continue.
I am hoping, but not holding my breath, that the cool stuff will be worth this sacrifice. That it will be unique to Xbox Live. That it will be worth buying a 360 for. That it will revolutionise the way we game online, in a good way!
There are a few things which may come, which for me are not worth the sacrifice of losing original Xbox Live... more than 100 people on your friends list, an internet browser, anything to do with social networking that isn't to do with gaming. Naked Avatar Uno!
I am not going to go as far as some original Xbox Live fans and stop my Gold subscription on the 15th of April 2010, but I will be looking at where Xbox Live goes from here with interest. My Gold membersip feels less shiny now.

The world of Live and Gaming.
I don't really want to start this as it will mean i will be sitting on my ass instead of going to the shop to buy foods, and since i decided not to be gym'in' today due to snow, tired and stuff.
The world of gaming has become main stream, but with main stream you have to have all that goes with it, Video (and caputure), browzers, music, FB, Twitter etc, etc, etc Sony Killed their back comp on the PS3 quite early but the PS2 is still strong.
MS's Xbox was a huge test and a dream of the lord and master of computer money, BG, to put a media box in everyone's home before the decade was out, and that box has been ticked, a long time ago, but since this is still a new phenomina, people are racing for the next big thing, Motion control, Natal, etc. Money, time, effort and trying to please everyone is not an easy recipe for the future but thats what the gaming giants have to deal with.
I think EA, as known as the evil empire in the day(some still do) but i think they took as much money as they could in the day, because the gaming thing was only going to last so long, but here we are today, 22 million strong on XBox Live, Wow has a similar number, most of Korea are gaming fans or Gold farmers, and China has jumped on that wagon.
Gaming is huge, making more than Film and music combined, in the last year or before, and we have to move with this flow or it will die and we will be geeks and nerds again, not that we stopped being so, but we are now looked at as equals to musician and film makers, if you can understand that(and keeping in within the media bubble). And yes you can argue how is gaming compared to a talent like music or film making or writting etc, but art is a talent, so argue away! LOLZ!
In truth, I just don't play original Xbox games anymore, I love Burnout 3 but after the 4th time, i think, of playing it through to unlock cars to play online and putting up with tihs coms, I don't miss it that much, revenge has a place but I just don't have the skills or the umph to play to a real standard anymore. I do miss my Burnout 2, But I did a lot of hours on that game to say i did a life time of play on it, but will miss that time of chasing my friend in split screen, and 'training' it around the map, like a baby on an umbilical cord, with Partisan.
Halo 2 was fun, and I miss Crash and Burn game modes, Carve, Crimson Sky's and a lot of other game si Still own but when I could not recover my tag back on my original xbox (No2), I gave up on the machine, but still have it and still dust it, but never switched it on in a long while.
Zombie it will be hard to lose our great past on the Burnout games, though through, those great games, stuff has happened way beyond gaming, and i am greatful, one of the reasons I still Like Alex (and his boss too), he created with his workers, some amazing games that have spurned a cult web site, and have created loves and friendships that will last till we die or until I say something stupid again, ;)
I do have more to say but i have to shop and i have a busy night playing WOW, yes, I like, so live with it, it's something to do on a cold night, I have a laugh, and though I don't have many friends on it, it's nice to play something that has got so much in it, from the game its self, to the build, art work and all that jazz, a hell of a lot of JAZZ!
I look forward to the future, I hope it brings Joy Ride quicker and Crackdown 2, and Thankfully Umo has Videos to enjoy when we sit back and reminise? (SP)
And maybe someone will do a rebuild of BO3 for the next gen lolz! Or something similar as that game still can't be beat for multiplayer, just need more tracks and different varity or cars too, like the Classic Tuk Tuk!
Be well to each other and recycle because eating of the the floor and drinking tea out of your hands is hard to deal with!

Zombie you can put up a poll?
It will not be accurate but at least you will know, something like, should we keep Xbox live originals or Move on?

Slowly getting used to the idea...
the shock has subsided slightly during the course of the day. Thanks for your words Suf, I think it helped!
I still really want to know the reasons behind the decision... but I guess I can wait until MS are ready to tell us. Although I don't like that EA sunset their servers, at least they give percentages of players and full reasons for doing so. I would have been happier if MS had of given us numbers. I read on a forum that about 4000 players are online on Halo 2 daily, which seems like quite a lot to me, but I guess it is only 0.00017% of the 23 million users that Xbox keep boasting about. Those 23 million aren't all Gold memberships, it includes Silver members too, and we have a couple of those, so how many actual people are on Xbox Live???
This is what EA say about their server closures:
"As background information, the shutdowns scheduled for February 2010 represent 0.3% of our peak online usage. Despite some people’s perception, there is a lot of behind-the-scenes work involved with keeping these older games up and running. We would rather our hard-working engineering and IT staff focus on keeping a positive experience for the other 99% of customers playing our more popular games. These decisions to retire games is never easy. The EA development teams and operational staff pour their hearts into these games almost as much as the customers playing them and it is hard to see one retired. We hope you have gotten many hours of enjoyment out of the games and we appreciate your ongoing patronage."

How many members???...
As well as questioning how many of the 23 million are Gold, I would also like to know how many are on the Original Xbox only.
If the 23 million is based on Gold and Silver members, how many people do you think that really is? Between Xandu and myself we have 5 Xbox Live accounts, 3 gold and 2 silver. I also know many people on Revenge with countless gamertags!!! You know who you are!!
Pretty much everybody I game with on a regular basis has at least 2 accounts. Even counting the number of 360's out there is an unreliable account of how many people there actually are. Xandu and I have 2 360's each due to buying replacements before the RROD warranty extension kicked in.
I think the 23 million that Xbox boast about is a highly inflated figure.

DLC is FREE!
On Original Xbox Live games. I downloaded a lot of premium content yesterday, each time I got an error message saying I would not be charged, the next time I attempted to download the paid for content, it showed as being purchased!

Try it with a cheap download... and trust me!
Although it says the cost, when you click to purchase I promise you will not be charged! You will get an error saying your card can not be charged, and then the item will show as being purchased and you can download it!
Someone on xbox.com posted this in response tho...
"I would not recommend trying this with too many items ZombieTron in the event it is a temporary issue with the billing system, and in a month's time you have a bill on your CC for over $200 of original Xbox premium DLC."
But, I no longer have a credit card associated with my Xbox Live account, so it shouldn't be a problem!

Originl Xbox DLC
What are you trying to buy?
I got the Starwars Battlefront 2 DLC. The Original Xbox games DLC should be a monetary value, not MS points. Works for me anyway!

Sounds like
Morning Zombie :)
They're probably trying to buy Burnout 3 on the marketplace. I lol'ed at Lucky on the xbox forum too, clearly their 'original' xbox was a 360. Poor thing. They think xbox live will stop working for it and they have to buy a new 360 if they want to play online with it.
I expected more knowledge from Lucky.
There are going to be sooooo many surprised people on April 15th when it stops working. Angry surprised too. I've not had an official e-mail yet telling me Original xbox live is closing, I don't see them sending one to all the affected people and most of them won't know unless through friends maybe.

Email notification for Original Xbox users
I think the Email will only go out to those who didn't upgrade to 360. Although I will be affected as I still use Original Xbox games, I doubt I will get personal notification. I wonder how many Original Xbox owners still have the email address that they had when they first signed up to Xbox Live?
I really don't understand why MS don't send out an all users email, I get the Xbox advert email, so I know they could do this easily enough.
But, their terms and conditions state they can close the service at any time without warning, so I guess they are keeping to their word!
